Look for similar age, size and condition and loacation. You should always request a hearing dont just go to the first round of the protest. Its less stressful to get a company to do it for you but not necessary. If you have homestead exemption there is a cap on the amount they can raise the value every year. LaTeshia! Many of my clients employ a tax protest service to assist them through this process and have great success every year. If you wanted to let go of the hassle, O’Connor and Bettencourt are the two major sources for protest companies in the Houston area and both have received ample great reviews! If you wanted to keep more hold of the reigns and do it yourself, it would be most advantageous for you to start with having a local realtor pull comparable sales for you that might help sway value downward. From here, you’ll want to take note of items in your home that would need to be repaired or replaced if you were to sell your property and what those repairs would cost you. For example, if you have carpet in your home, and there are stains and/or holes, you may mention that your home would likely sell for $15,000 less because of this, so that you’d have to replace it all, which would cost you $10,000. Texas is a non-disclosure state so I would start with partnering a Realtor who can search 2022 sold data in your neighborhood. I would also search on the Appraisal District website for homes nearby and look at their data. I would also recommend talking to a Tax Protest Service. The deadline to file is May 15th for Harris County.
