Air Travel
The main point of entry for international travelers is Fua'amotu International Airport on the main island of Tongatapu. There are also domestic flights that connect the main island with the outer islands of Vava'u, Ha'apai, and 'Eua.
Car Rental
Cars are available for rent from various agencies at the airport and in Nuku'alofa, the capital city. Keep in mind that driving is on the left side of the road in Tonga.
Taxis
Taxis are readily available, especially in Nuku'alofa. They are not metered so it's advisable to agree on a fare before starting your journey.
Buses
Public buses operate on the main islands, although schedules and routes can be unreliable and irregular.
Ferries
Ferries operate between the islands, although services can be infrequent and dependent on weather conditions.
Cycling
Bicycles can be rented on the main islands and are a popular way to get around, especially in Nuku'alofa and on the smaller islands.
Visa
Visitors from most countries can enter Tonga without a visa for up to 30 days. However, check the latest visa requirements before you travel.
Health and Safety
Ensure you are up-to-date with routine vaccinations before traveling to Tonga. Also, medical facilities are limited so travel insurance that covers medical evacuation is recommended.
Currency
The currency of Tonga is the Pa'anga (TOP). Credit cards are not widely accepted outside of resorts and hotels, so it's a good idea to carry cash.
Language
The official languages of Tonga are Tongan and English. Remember to respect local customs and traditions, especially when visiting rural areas and smaller islands.
