Modes of Transport

The main modes of transport in Senegal are buses, taxis, ferries, and car rentals. Taxis are the most convenient way to get around, especially in Dakar. Bush taxis or "sept places" are common for long-distance travel.

Public Transport

Dakar has a public bus system, known as Dakar Dem Dikk. It's cheap but can be crowded. The country also has a train service, but it is often unreliable.

Car Rentals

Car rental services are available but can be quite expensive. Also, driving in Senegal can be chaotic, especially in Dakar, and road conditions outside major cities can be poor.

Taxis

Always negotiate the fare before you get in a taxi as most taxis do not have meters.

Ferries

Ferries are a common way to travel between Dakar and the Gorée Island.

Air Travel

Senegal has one major international airport, Blaise Diagne International Airport, located near the town of Diass. Domestic flights are available and are usually reliable.

Road Safety

Road conditions in Senegal can vary significantly. While major roads in cities are generally well-maintained, many secondary roads are not. Be particularly careful when driving at night, as many roads are not well lit.

Traffic Laws

Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers. The use of a mobile phone while driving is prohibited unless it is fitted with a hands-free system.

Cycling

While cycling is common in Senegal, it can also be dangerous due to traffic and road conditions.

Traveling by Boat

Pirogues, traditional Senegalese fishing boats, are often used for short trips along the coast or to nearby islands. Remember that it's always important to stay vigilant of your surroundings, and be wary of pickpockets or scams that can occur in crowded transportation hubs.
