Air Travel

The main international airport is Nouakchott–Oumtounsy International Airport. Air France, Turkish Airlines, Royal Air Maroc and Mauritania Airlines are some of the major airlines that operate here.

Car Rentals

Car rentals are available at the airport and in major cities. International driving licenses are accepted. However, road conditions can be poor in some areas, and driving at night should be avoided due to lack of street lights.

Taxis

Taxis are widely used in Mauritania, especially in Nouakchott. They are relatively cheap but often in poor condition. It's advisable to negotiate the fare before starting the journey.

Public Transportation

Public transportation is not well organized in Mauritania. Minibuses known as "bush taxis" are commonly used for inter-city travel. They don't follow a strict schedule and depart when full.

Trains

Mauritania has one of the longest trains in the world, primarily used to transport iron ore. There is a passenger car attached, but conditions are basic.

Safety

Mauritania is generally safe for travel, but visitors should take precautions due to occasional political instability and threat of terrorism.

Visas

Most visitors will need a visa to enter Mauritania. It is recommended to obtain this in advance from an embassy or consulate.

Health

Malaria is a risk in Mauritania, so appropriate precautions should be taken. Remember, it's always a good idea to check current travel advisories and health information before planning your trip.
