Trains and Subways

Japan has an extensive and efficient railway system, with most cities connected by local and express trains. Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka have an extensive subway system.

Japan Rail Pass

Highly recommended for visitors who plan to travel extensively by train. It offers unlimited travel on almost all Japan Railways (JR) trains, including most shinkansen (bullet trains), for a fixed period of 7, 14, or 21 days.

Buses

Buses are an important means of transportation in Japan, particularly in areas not covered by trains. They are also a cheaper alternative to bullet trains for long-distance travel.

Taxis

Taxis are a convenient but expensive way to get around cities. They can be hailed on the street or found at taxi stands at train stations, hotels and shopping centers.

Bicycles

Cycling is a popular mode of transportation in Japan. Many cities have cycling lanes and there are bike rental shops available.

Car Rental

Renting a car is an option for those who wish to explore rural areas. However, driving in Japan requires an International Driving Permit (IDP) or a Japanese driver's license.

Tickets and Cards

Tickets can be purchased at ticket machines at train and subway stations. For convenience, consider getting a prepaid card like the Suica or Pasmo card which can be used on trains, subways and buses in most cities.

Navigation

Google Maps works well in Japan for public transportation. There are also several Japan-specific apps like Hyperdia, which provides detailed train schedules and routes.

Language

Most signage at stations and on public transport are in both Japanese and English. Announcements on trains and subways are also usually made in both languages.

Etiquette

Remember to queue in an orderly manner when boarding trains and buses. Talking loudly and eating are typically frowned upon on public transport.

Accessibility

Most stations and public transport in Japan are equipped with facilities for disabled passengers, including elevators and wheelchair-accessible toilets.

Transport during Peak Hours

Trains and subways can be extremely crowded during peak hours (7-9am and 5-7pm). If possible, avoid travelling during these times.

Night-time Transportation

Be aware that most public transportation services stop around midnight. Plan accordingly to avoid getting stranded.

Air Travel

Japan has an extensive domestic air network. Flying is often the most practical mode of transport for long-distance travel within the country.

Ferries

Japan is an archipelago, and there are many ferry routes connecting the islands. Taking a ferry can be an interesting alternative to flying or train travel.
