Modes of Transport
Ghana has several modes of transport including buses, taxis, and tro-tros (local minibuses). There are also domestic flights available for longer distances.
Taxis
Taxis in Ghana are plentiful and relatively inexpensive. They can be hailed on the street or booked through a hotel. It's advisable to negotiate the fare before starting the journey as most taxis do not have meters.
Tro-Tros
Tro-tros are the most common form of transport for locals. They are usually overcrowded and not very comfortable but they are very cheap and can get you to places that buses and taxis can't.
Car Rentals
Renting a car is an option but not recommended for visitors unfamiliar with Ghanaian road conditions and driving habits. It can be expensive and requires an International Driving Permit.
Buses
Long distance buses are available for travel between cities. They are relatively cheap and some companies offer air-conditioned buses with comfortable seats.
Domestic Flights
Domestic flights are available and are a quicker, though more expensive, option for travel between major cities.
Safety
Road safety is a major concern in Ghana. Roads can be in poor condition, particularly in rural areas, and driving standards can be erratic.
Public Transport Timings
Public transport in Ghana doesn't operate on a strict timetable. Tro-tros and shared taxis, in particular, leave when they are full rather than at specific times.
Boat Travel
Boats and ferries are used for travel along the coast and on Lake Volta. It's important to know that safety standards may not be up to those expected in Western countries.
Travel Documents
