Air Travel

Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa is Ethiopia's main gateway. Ethiopian Airlines is the national carrier and has an extensive international network.

Railways

Ethiopia has a railway connection with Djibouti, which provides a trade link between the two countries. However, the trains are not frequent and the railway is mainly used for freight.

Buses and Minibuses

These are the most common form of public transportation in Ethiopia. They are cheap and cover most of the country, but can be crowded and uncomfortable. It's important to be aware of your belongings as pickpocketing can occur.

Taxis

Taxis are available in the larger cities. It is advisable to negotiate the fare before beginning the journey as taxis do not have meters.

Car Rental

These are not common modes of transportation in Ethiopia. However, they can be rented in some tourist areas.

Ferries

Lake Tana and Lake Ziway have ferry services. These can be a pleasant way to travel and see the sights.

Traveling at Night

It is generally not advised to travel at night due to poor road conditions and the risk of banditry in some areas.

Roadblocks and Checkpoints

These are common, especially in the border areas. You should carry identification and be prepared to stop and answer questions.

Traveling during rainy season

The rainy season (June to September) can make some roads impassable due to flooding. It is advisable to check local advice before traveling during this time. Remember, it's always important to have a travel insurance that covers medical evacuation, as local medical facilities may be limited.
