Air Travel
Cape Verde has four international airports, located on the islands of Sal, Santiago, Boa Vista and Sao Vicente. The national airline, TACV, operates regular flights between the islands.
Car Rental
Visitors can rent a car at the airport or in the major towns. However, drivers must be at least 21 years old and have a valid international driver's license. Driving is on the right-hand side of the road.
Taxis
Taxis are available in the main towns and at the airports. They are usually metered, but it's also common to negotiate the fare before the trip.
Buses
There are regular bus services on the islands of Santiago, Sao Vicente and Santo Antao. Buses are generally old and crowded, but they are a cheap way to get around.
Ferries
Ferries operate between the islands, but schedules can be irregular and are often affected by the weather. It's advisable to check the departure times in advance.
Aluguers
These are shared taxis or minibuses that operate on fixed routes. They are a popular mode of transport and are usually cheaper than regular taxis.
Bicycle Rental
On some islands, it's possible to rent bicycles. This can be a fun and eco-friendly way to explore.
Travel Documents
Visitors are advised to carry a copy of their passport and visa at all times, as the local police may request to see them.
Health and Safety
Cape Verde has a low crime rate, but visitors should still take precautions against petty theft. It's also advisable to take out travel insurance that covers medical evacuation, as the medical facilities on the islands are limited.
Money
The currency in Cape Verde is the Cape Verdean escudo (CVE). Credit cards are accepted in many places, but it's also useful to have cash, especially for small purchases and in remote areas.
