Belize offers various modes of transportation including water taxis, buses, taxis, rental cars, bicycles, and domestic flights.
Car Rentals
Visitors can rent a car at the airport or in major towns. However, drivers should be aware that many roads in Belize are unpaved and rental companies often have restrictions on which roads their vehicles can be used on.
Taxis
Taxis are readily available in towns and cities. They do not have meters, so fares should be negotiated beforehand.
Water Taxis
Water taxis are a common means to travel to the various cayes off the coast. They operate on a schedule, but can be unreliable at times.
Buses
Buses are an affordable way to travel around Belize, but they can be crowded and often make many stops.
Domestic Flights
There are two domestic airlines in Belize, Maya Island Air and Tropic Air. They offer flights to major towns and islands.
Road Conditions
Road conditions in Belize can vary greatly. Paved roads are typically in good condition, but unpaved roads can be rough and challenging to navigate, especially in the rainy season.
Safety
While Belize is generally safe for travelers, visitors should be cautious of their surroundings, especially in Belize City and at night. It's recommended to use licensed taxi services and avoid isolated areas.
Public Transportation
Public transportation can be limited, especially in remote areas and after dark. Planning ahead is essential.
Driving
Driving in Belize is on the right-hand side of the road. A valid driver’s license is required and the minimum driving age is 18.
Insurance
It's recommended to have travel insurance that covers emergency evacuation, as well as car insurance if renting a vehicle.
Border Crossings
If planning to cross the border into Guatemala or Mexico by car, ensure to have the necessary paperwork from the rental company.
