As your children go through high school, choosing the right school is equally important as deciding on a perfect home. High school is when students are given the tools to figure out the paths they want to pursue as adults. There are more subjects and extra-curricular activities that students can choose from. Taking on their interests and passions help to shape the critical decisions they need to make as they plan their future.
When we compared Wisdom High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with South Early College High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Wisdom High School’s regular student population is 2,031 with a student-teacher ratio of 21.7 students/teacher ratio. The student population at South Early College High School is 396 students and a student-teacher ratio of 20.9 students/teacher ratio.
Wisdom High School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 66 in student achievement, 75 in school progress and 73 in closing performance gaps. It scored 74 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, South Early College High School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 95 in student achievement, 94 in school progress, 94 in closing performance gaps and 95 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Wisdom High School's one out of seven distinction is in Social Studies. South Early College High School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Wisdom High School is Hispanics who make up nearly 75.73% of student population, followed by African Americans (13.49%), Whites or Caucasians (5.22%), Asians (4.68%), Two or More Races (0.54%) and Native Americans (0.25%).
At South Early College High School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 54.29% of student population, followed by African Americans (41.67%), Whites or Caucasians (2.02%), Asians (0.76%) and Two or More Races (0.76%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Wisdom High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 98.28% compared to 80.81% at South Early College High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Wisdom High School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 66.22% of its student population compared to 11.62% at South Early College High School.
In addition, Wisdom High School has 65.63% bilingual students, 2.46% are in the gifted and talented program, while 7.58% are in the special education program. This stacks up against South Early College High School with 10.61% bilingual students, 25.76% gifted and talented students and 1.52% students in the special education program.
Wisdom High School's 93 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 5.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 9.4 years. South Early College High School's 19 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 6.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 13.9 years.
Of its teaching staff, Wisdom High School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has nine teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 24 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 24 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 25 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 11 beginning teachers. South Early College High School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has one teacher only serving the school for 20-30 years, seven teachers have worked for 11-20 years, three teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while five teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. Wisdom High School employs 47 female teachers and 45 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, three teachers are in special education without any assistance. The school also employs four staff members in the school administration department and 14 more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, South Early College High School employs 12 female teachers and seven male teachers. Of its teaching staff, one teacher is aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs one staff members in the school administration department and five more working as school support staff.
