Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared West University Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Sherman Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
West University Elementary School has a regular student population of 1,124 with a 16.7 students/teacher ratio while Sherman Elementary School has 521 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17.6 students/teacher ratio.
West University Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 96 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and 92 in closing performance gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. West University Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science and post-secondary. Sherman Elementary School’s two out of seven distinctions are in post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at West University Elementary School. They make up for 61.83% of student population, followed by Asians (17.17%), Hispanics (13.08%), Two or More Races (5.87%), African Americans (1.60%) and Native Americans (0.18%).
At Sherman Elementary School, Hispanics make up 88.10% of student population, followed by African Americans (9.60%), Whites or Caucasians (2.11%) and Two or More Races (0.19%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the West University Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 6.58% compared to 99.04% at Sherman Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, West University Elementary School has 45 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 4.00% of student population. Sherman Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 196 or about 37.62% of student population.
West University Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 3.91%, gifted and talented students, 53.20%, while 8.10% are in the special education program. Sherman Elementary School bilingual students comprise 38.20%, gifted and talented students, 2.30%, and 7.87% are in the special education program.
