Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Stevenson Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Forest Brook Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a wide disparity in ratings.
Stevenson Middle School’s regular student population is 1,260 with a 17.3 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Forest Brook Middle School is 742 students and a 20.5 students/teacher ratio.
Stevenson Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 80 in student achievement, 90 in school progress and 85 in closing performance gaps. It scored 89 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Forest Brook Middle School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365. The school posted 52 in student achievement, 60 in school progress, 59 in closing performance gaps and 59 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Stevenson Middle School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science, Social Studies, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. Forest Brook Middle School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Stevenson Middle School is Hispanics who make up nearly 90.87% of student population, followed by African Americans (4.60%), Asians (3.41%), Whites or Caucasians (0.71%), Two or More Races (0.24%) and Native Americans (0.08%).
At Forest Brook Middle School, African Americans are the biggest group, comprising 56.74% of student population, followed by Hispanics (40.30%), Whites or Caucasians (1.62%), Two or More Races (0.81%), Asians (0.27%) and Native Americans (0.27%).
Based on household incomes, the Stevenson Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 91.59% compared to 98.52% at Forest Brook Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Stevenson Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 45.48% of its student population compared to 25.07% at Forest Brook Middle School.
Stevenson Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 45.16%, gifted and talented students, 24.52%, while 8.25% are in the special education program. Forest Brook Middle School bilingual students comprise 23.99%, gifted and talented students, 2.56%, and 13.21% are in the special education program.
Stevenson Middle School's 72 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 6.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.6 years. Teachers at Forest Brook Middle School, numbering 36 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 6.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.4 years.
Of its teaching staff, Stevenson Middle School has four teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, seven teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 20 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 32 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers. Forest Brook Middle School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, ten teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 11 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 11 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Stevenson Middle School there are 49 female teachers and 23 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, one special education teacher is being assisted by four teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and nine more working as school support staff.

Of its teaching staff, three special education teachers are being assisted by four teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
