When we compared Sharpstown High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Energy Institute High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Sharpstown High School’s regular student population is 1,731 with a student-teacher ratio of 18.7 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Energy Institute High School is 696 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17 students/teacher ratio.
Sharpstown High School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 67 in student achievement, 77 in school progress and 73 in closing performance gaps. It scored 76 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Energy Institute High School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 94 in student achievement, 92 in school progress, 100 in closing performance gaps and 96 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Energy Institute High School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. Sharpstown High School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Sharpstown High School is Hispanics who make up nearly 79.66% of student population, followed by African Americans (15.66%), Asians (2.54%), Whites or Caucasians (1.68%), Native Americans (0.35%) and Two or More Races (0.12%).
The student population at Energy Institute High School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 43.97%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (25.57%), African Americans (23.99%), Asians (3.30%), Two or More Races (2.87%) and Native Americans (0.29%).
Based on household incomes, Sharpstown High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 83.42% compared to 59.77% at Energy Institute High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Sharpstown High School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 55.63% of its student population compared to 4.31% at Energy Institute High School.
In addition, Sharpstown High School has 54.48% bilingual students, 5.95% are in the gifted and talented program, while 8.20% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Energy Institute High School with 3.74% bilingual students, 47.13% gifted and talented students and 6.90% students in the special education program.
Sharpstown High School's 92 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 5.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 9 years. Energy Institute High School's 41 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 3.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 6.3 years.
Of its teaching staff, Sharpstown High School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has eight teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 21 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 25 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 33 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers. Energy Institute High School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, three teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 12 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 18 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. Sharpstown High School employs 53 female teachers and 39 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, three special education teachers are being assisted by seven teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs one staff members in the school administration department and 12 more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, Energy Institute High School employs 31 female teachers and ten male teachers. Of its teaching staff, two teachers are aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs one staff members in the school administration department and eight more working as school support staff.
