When we compared Salyards Middle School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, with Cook Middle School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Salyards Middle School’s regular student population is 1,489 with a 17.9 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Cook Middle School is 1,451 students and a 16 students/teacher ratio.
Salyards Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 93 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 96 in closing performance gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Cook Middle School's seven out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Salyards Middle School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Salyards Middle School. They make up for 54.67% of student population, followed by Hispanics (22.57%), African Americans (10.07%), Asians (6.92%), Two or More Races (4.84%) and Native Americans (0.60%).
At Cook Middle School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 55.89% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (16.13%), African Americans (12.13%), Asians (11.58%), Two or More Races (3.03%) and Native Americans (1.10%).
Based on household incomes, the Salyards Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 19.81% compared to 63.82% at Cook Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Salyards Middle School has 52 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 3.49% of student population. Cook Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 260 or about 17.92% of student population.
Salyards Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 3.16%, gifted and talented students, 15.25%, while 9.74% are in the special education program. Cook Middle School bilingual students comprise 16.54%, gifted and talented students, 9.37%, and 11.37% are in the special education program.
Salyards Middle School's 83 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 10.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.8 years. Teachers at Cook Middle School, numbering 90 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 6.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11 years.
Of its teaching staff, Salyards Middle School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 16 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 28 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 12 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 22 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. At Cook Middle School there are 66 female teachers and 23 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 12 special education teachers are being assisted by 18 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
