Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Reynolds Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Oates Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Reynolds Elementary School has a regular student population of 320 with a 14.2 students/teacher ratio while Oates Elementary School has 349 students and a student-teacher ratio of 18.4 students/teacher ratio.

Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Oates Elementary School's one out of seven distinction is in with 25% student progress. Reynolds Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Reynolds Elementary School is African Americans who make up nearly 83.75% of student population, followed by Hispanics (12.81%), Whites or Caucasians (1.25%), Two or More Races (0.94%), Asians (0.63%) and Native Americans (0.63%).
At Oates Elementary School, Hispanics make up 86.25% of student population, followed by African Americans (11.75%), Two or More Races (1.15%), Asians (0.57%) and Whites or Caucasians (0.29%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Reynolds Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is lower at 95.94% compared to 97.99% at Oates Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Reynolds Elementary School has 8 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 2.50% of student population. Oates Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 174 or about 49.86% of student population.
In addition, Reynolds Elementary School has 2.81% bilingual students, 0.94% are in the gifted and talented program, while 8.44% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Oates Elementary School with 49.86% bilingual students, 1.15% gifted and talented students and 8.02% students in the special education program.
