Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. When we compared Otto Middle School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, with Hendrick Middle School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Otto Middle School’s regular student population is 1,020 with a 15 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Hendrick Middle School is 642 students and a 14 students/teacher ratio.
Otto Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 91 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and 92 in closing performance gaps. It scored 92 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Hendrick Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 79 in student achievement, 81 in school progress, 77 in closing performance gaps and 80 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Otto Middle School's seven out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Hendrick Middle School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Asians comprise the biggest group at Otto Middle School. They make up for 35.10% of student population, followed by Hispanics (27.25%), Whites or Caucasians (20.29%), African Americans (12.75%), Two or More Races (4.31%) and Native Americans (0.10%).
The student population at Hendrick Middle School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 38.32%, followed by African Americans (24.61%), Hispanics (19.63%), Asians (11.21%), Two or More Races (5.92%) and Native Americans (0.31%).
Based on household incomes, Otto Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is higher at 34.90% compared to 34.58% at Hendrick Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Otto Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 22.84% of its student population compared to 8.72% at Hendrick Middle School.
Otto Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 22.55%, gifted and talented students, 22.75%, while 10.49% are in the special education program. Hendrick Middle School bilingual students comprise 8.57%, gifted and talented students, 14.95%, and 15.73% are in the special education program.
Otto Middle School's 67 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 4.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.5 years. Teachers at Hendrick Middle School, numbering 46 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 10.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13 years.
Of its teaching staff, Otto Middle School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 14 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 18 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 23 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including seven beginning teachers. At Hendrick Middle School there are 30 female teachers and 15 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 11 special education teachers are being assisted by three teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
