A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Miller Intermediate’s five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Killough Middle School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Miller Intermediate. They make up for 45.39% of student population, followed by African Americans (38.96%), Asians (9.95%), Whites or Caucasians (4.13%), Native Americans (0.85%) and Two or More Races (0.61%).
At Killough Middle School, Hispanics make up 66.08% of student population, followed by African Americans (17.46%), Asians (12.34%), Whites or Caucasians (2.87%), Native Americans (1.00%) and Two or More Races (0.25%).
Based on household incomes, the Miller Intermediate’s economically disadvantaged students is lower at 82.65% compared to 82.92% at Killough Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Miller Intermediate has 334 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 40.53% of student population. Killough Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 363 or about 45.26% of student population.
In addition, Miller Intermediate has 44.05% bilingual students, 9.95% are in the gifted and talented program, while 12.62% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Killough Middle School with 45.14% bilingual students, 9.98% gifted and talented students and 11.10% students in the special education program.
Miller Intermediate's 61 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 13 years with individual teaching experience averaging 16.1 years. Teachers at Killough Middle School, numbering 67 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 10.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13 years.
Of its teaching staff, Miller Intermediate has four teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 13 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 25 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 15 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while five teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher.
