Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Heritage Elementary School, which is a part of LEWISVILLE ISD, with Ethridge Elementary School, which is a part of LEWISVILLE ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Heritage Elementary School has a regular student population of 505 with a 13.6 students/teacher ratio while Ethridge Elementary School has 375 students and a student-teacher ratio of 10.8 students/teacher ratio.
Heritage Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 92 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. It scored 94 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Ethridge Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 76 in student achievement, 69 in school progress, 72 in closing performance gaps and 75 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only one distinction designation or award for performance. For Heritage Elementary School this is in 25% closing performance gaps while Ethridge Elementary School secured one for Science.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Heritage Elementary School is Whites or Caucasians who make up nearly 66.93% of student population, followed by Hispanics (14.85%), Asians (9.50%), Two or More Races (4.75%), African Americans (3.37%) and Native Americans (0.59%).
The student population at Ethridge Elementary School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 47.47%, followed by Hispanics (27.20%), African Americans (13.87%), Two or More Races (8.00%), Asians (2.67%) and Native Americans (0.27%).
Based on household incomes, the Heritage Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 6.73% compared to 44.00% at Ethridge Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Heritage Elementary School has 16 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 3.17% of student population. Ethridge Elementary School has more ELLs at 19 or about 5.07% of student population.
In addition, Heritage Elementary School has 2.57% bilingual students, 3.37% are in the gifted and talented program, while 18.42% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Ethridge Elementary School with 5.07% bilingual students, 8.53% gifted and talented students and 25.33% students in the special education program.
37 teachers employed at Heritage Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 11.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 15.7 years. The 34 teachers at Ethridge Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 8.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.8 years.
Of its teaching staff, Heritage Elementary School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has nine teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while three teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only. Ethridge Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while six teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Heritage Elementary School there are 36 female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by six teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and four more working as school support staff.
At Ethridge Elementary School there are 32 female teachers and two male teachers. Of its teaching staff, seven special education teachers are being assisted by five teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and three more working as school support staff.
