Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Finch Elementary School, which is a part of MCKINNEY ISD, with Burks Elementary School, which is a part of MCKINNEY ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Finch Elementary School has a regular student population of 333 with a 10 students/teacher ratio while Burks Elementary School has 332 students and a student-teacher ratio of 10.7 students/teacher ratio.
Finch Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 72 in student achievement, 93 in school progress and 82 in closing performance gaps. It scored 90 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Burks Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 62 in student achievement, 77 in school progress, 66 in closing performance gaps and 74 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Finch Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in Science, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Burks Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Finch Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 75.98% of student population, followed by African Americans (10.21%), Whites or Caucasians (9.01%), Two or More Races (2.40%), Asians (1.80%) and Native Americans (0.60%).
At Burks Elementary School, Hispanics make up 68.07% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (15.36%), African Americans (12.35%), Two or More Races (3.92%) and Native Americans (0.30%). There is no Asians student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Finch Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 73.27% compared to 79.52% at Burks Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Finch Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 61.26% of its student population compared to 47.59% at Burks Elementary School.
In addition, Finch Elementary School has 60.66% bilingual students, 4.50% are in the gifted and talented program, while 21.32% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Burks Elementary School with 48.19% bilingual students, 6.02% gifted and talented students and 13.25% students in the special education program.
33 teachers employed at Finch Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 8.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.7 years. The 31 teachers at Burks Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 7.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.6 years.
Of its teaching staff, Finch Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, four teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while six teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers. Burks Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 14 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while three teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Finch Elementary School there are 28 female teachers and four male teachers. Of its teaching staff, seven special education teachers are being assisted by 13 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and five more working as school support staff.
