Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Cummings Elementary School, which is a part of ALIEF ISD, with Best Elementary School, which is a part of ALIEF ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Cummings Elementary School has a regular student population of 552 with a 11.5 students/teacher ratio while Best Elementary School has 765 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13 students/teacher ratio.
Cummings Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 65 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 76 in closing performance gaps. It scored 87 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Best Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 50 in student achievement, 77 in school progress, 70 in closing performance gaps and 75 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Cummings Elementary School's one out of seven distinction is in with 25% student progress. Best Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Cummings Elementary School. They make up for 47.28% of student population, followed by African Americans (36.23%), Asians (10.87%), Whites or Caucasians (3.44%), Two or More Races (1.27%) and Native Americans (0.54%).
At Best Elementary School, Hispanics make up 80.65% of student population, followed by African Americans (16.34%), Whites or Caucasians (1.44%), Asians (0.65%) and Native Americans (0.52%). There is no Two or More Races student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Cummings Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 90.22% compared to 84.97% at Best Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Cummings Elementary School has 255 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 46.20% of student population. Best Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 578 or about 75.56% of student population.
In addition, Cummings Elementary School has 45.83% bilingual students, 0.91% are in the gifted and talented program, while 14.86% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Best Elementary School with 75.56% bilingual students, 1.18% gifted and talented students and 7.19% students in the special education program.
48 teachers employed at Cummings Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 7.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.6 years. The 58 teachers at Best Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 6.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.2 years.
Of its teaching staff, Cummings Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 16 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 14 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. Best Elementary School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 21 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 19 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 13 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Cummings Elementary School there are 46 female teachers and two male teachers. Of its teaching staff, seven special education teachers are being assisted by 20 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
