Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Bondy Intermediate, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, with Keller Middle School, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Bondy Intermediate’s regular student population is 961 with a 14.7 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Keller Middle School is 646 students and a 12.3 students/teacher ratio.
Bondy Intermediate performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 83 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and 90 in closing performance gaps. It scored 91 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Keller Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 65 in student achievement, 79 in school progress, 73 in closing performance gaps and 77 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Bondy Intermediate's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Keller Middle School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Bondy Intermediate is Hispanics who make up nearly 79.19% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (9.99%), African Americans (5.10%), Asians (4.89%), Two or More Races (0.62%) and Native Americans (0.10%).
At Keller Middle School, Hispanics make up 89.94% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (5.11%), African Americans (4.33%) and Two or More Races (0.62%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Bondy Intermediate’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 63.48% compared to 87.46% at Keller Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Bondy Intermediate has 193 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 20.08% of student population. Keller Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 274 or about 42.41% of student population.
In addition, Bondy Intermediate has 16.75% bilingual students, 9.68% are in the gifted and talented program, while 10.30% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Keller Middle School with 37.77% bilingual students, 9.75% gifted and talented students and 14.55% students in the special education program.
Bondy Intermediate's 65 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.6 years. Teachers at Keller Middle School, numbering 52 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 8.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.2 years.
Of its teaching staff, Bondy Intermediate has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 17 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 16 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 24 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers. Keller Middle School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 18 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 12 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 15 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Bondy Intermediate there are 44 female teachers and 21 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 15 special education teachers are being assisted by 13 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and seven more working as school support staff.
At Keller Middle School there are 36 female teachers and 16 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 13 special education teachers are being assisted by 18 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and seven more working as school support staff.
