Harlan High School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 81 in student achievement, 82 in school progress and 85 in closing performance gaps. It scored 83 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.

On the other hand, Taft High School also earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 80 in student achievement, 74 in school progress, 79 in closing performance gaps and 80 overall in post-secondary readiness.

A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.

Both schools garnered only one distinction designation or award for performance. For Harlan High School this is in with 25% student progress while Taft High School secured one for Social Studies.

Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Harlan High School. They make up for 59.50% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (18.32%), African Americans (12.56%), Two or More Races (6.30%), Asians (2.66%) and Native Americans (0.22%).

At Taft High School, Hispanics make up 66.22% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (17.94%), African Americans (8.58%), Two or More Races (4.42%), Asians (2.32%) and Native Americans (0.30%).

Based on household incomes, the Harlan High School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 28.62% compared to 33.18% at Taft High School.

In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Harlan High School has 128 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 4.61% of student population. Taft High School has significantly more ELLs at 185 or about 6.93% of student population.

In addition, Harlan High School has 3.60% bilingual students, 7.34% are in the gifted and talented program, while 11.30% are in the special education program.
