What is the best way to get a mailbox key
440My buyer just closed on a property needs the mailbox key and the seller doesn't have it. What is the best way for my client to get the key to the mailbox?

Tracie! Great question! This is a super common occurrence! Have your clients go to the closest local post office with their HUD statement/final closing disclosure and they can have the box rekeyed! The cost should be about $50 to have the post office re-key their mailbox it typically takes a few days to have this taken care of! Feel free to reach out anytime! Hi Tracie,Have your clients go to the post office with their closing statement or utility bill in their name to evidence they are the new owners of the property. Even if the Sellers did pass along a key, it's good practice to get a new one anyway since you don't know who had access to a copy of the old one. The buyer(s) will need to take a copy of the closing disclosure to the nearest USPS office and request rekeying service.

If the seller doesn't have the key to the mailbox and your buyer has already closed on the property, there are a few options your client can explore to obtain the mailbox key:Contact the Previous Owner, Contact the Homeowners Association (HOA) and Change the Lock.
