Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. When we compared Wilson Middle School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, with Carpenter Middle School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Wilson Middle School’s regular student population is 860 with a 14.2 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Carpenter Middle School is 623 students and a 13.6 students/teacher ratio.
Wilson Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 82 in student achievement, 83 in school progress and 76 in closing performance gaps. It scored 81 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Carpenter Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 73 in student achievement, 74 in school progress, 75 in closing performance gaps and 74 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Wilson Middle School's one out of seven distinction is in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA). Carpenter Middle School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Wilson Middle School. They make up for 39.07% of student population, followed by Hispanics (33.26%), African Americans (17.09%), Two or More Races (5.00%), Asians (4.88%) and Native Americans (0.70%).
The student population at Carpenter Middle School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 45.59%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (23.43%), African Americans (20.06%), Asians (6.10%), Two or More Races (4.49%) and Native Americans (0.32%).
Based on household incomes, the Wilson Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 39.42% compared to 55.38% at Carpenter Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Wilson Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 18.37% of its student population compared to 18.62% at Carpenter Middle School.
Wilson Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 17.91%, gifted and talented students, 14.42%, while 16.16% are in the special education program. Carpenter Middle School bilingual students comprise 18.46%, gifted and talented students, 14.29%, and 18.46% are in the special education program.
