Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Williams Elementary School, which is a part of ARLINGTON ISD, with Miller Elementary School, which is a part of ARLINGTON ISD, we noted a wide disparity in ratings.
Williams Elementary School has a regular student population of 573 with a 14.3 students/teacher ratio while Miller Elementary School has 598 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.4 students/teacher ratio.
Williams Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 72 in student achievement, 90 in school progress and 78 in closing performance gaps. It scored 86 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Miller Elementary School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365. The school posted 64 in student achievement, 70 in school progress, 68 in closing performance gaps and 69 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Williams Elementary School and Miller Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Williams Elementary School. They make up for 44.50% of student population, followed by African Americans (32.29%), Whites or Caucasians (12.91%), Asians (6.28%), Two or More Races (3.66%) and Native Americans (0.35%).
The student population at Miller Elementary School is also predominantly by African Americans at 32.78%, followed by Hispanics (29.77%), Whites or Caucasians (27.26%), Asians (6.19%), Two or More Races (3.51%) and Native Americans (0.33%).
Based on household incomes, Williams Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 77.84% compared to 69.06% at Miller Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Williams Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 28.27% of its student population compared to 14.05% at Miller Elementary School.
In addition, Williams Elementary School has 28.10% bilingual students, 3.66% are in the gifted and talented program, while 14.31% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Miller Elementary School with 14.05% bilingual students, 7.69% gifted and talented students and 16.72% students in the special education program.
40 teachers employed at Williams Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 9.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.6 years. The 41 teachers at Miller Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 6.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10 years.
Of its teaching staff, Williams Elementary School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while nine teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. Miller Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, eight teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 12 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Williams Elementary School there are 35 female teachers and five male teachers. Of its teaching staff, seven special education teachers are being assisted by 15 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
