When we compared Westside High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Kashmere High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a wide disparity in ratings.
Westside High School’s regular student population is 2,931 with a student-teacher ratio of 18.7 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Kashmere High School is 783 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.7 students/teacher ratio.
Westside High School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 81 in student achievement, 84 in school progress and 78 in closing performance gaps. It scored 82 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Kashmere High School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365. The school posted 62 in student achievement, 69 in school progress, 65 in closing performance gaps and 68 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Westside High School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and 25% closing performance gaps. Kashmere High School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Westside High School. They make up for 43.98% of student population, followed by African Americans (32.28%), Whites or Caucasians (14.94%), Asians (6.24%), Two or More Races (1.91%) and Native Americans (0.41%).
At Kashmere High School, African Americans are the biggest group, comprising 55.30% of student population, followed by Hispanics (41.89%), Whites or Caucasians (1.66%), Two or More Races (0.64%), Asians (0.26%) and Native Americans (0.26%).
Based on household incomes, the Westside High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 64.31% compared to 95.40% at Kashmere High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Westside High School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 14.98% of its student population compared to 21.58% at Kashmere High School.
Westside High School’s bilingual students comprise 14.23%, gifted and talented students, 25.93%, while 6.31% are in the special education program. Kashmere High School bilingual students comprise 20.31%, gifted and talented students, 4.21%, and 17.11% are in the special education program.
Westside High School's 156 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 8.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 12.3 years. Kashmere High School's 53 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 15.5 years.
Of its teaching staff, Westside High School has seven teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 25 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 41 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 33 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 42 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers. Kashmere High School has eight teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 16 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 12 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers.
Westside High School has three special education teachers assisted by 10 teacher aides or paraprofessionals. Kashmere High School has four special education teachers and 5 teacher aides or paraprofessionals.
