Western Hills High School’s regular student population is 917 with a student-teacher ratio of 13 students/teacher ratio. The student population at South Hills High School is 1,876 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.7 students/teacher ratio.
Western Hills High School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 74 in student achievement, 85 in school progress and 72 in closing performance gaps. It scored 81 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, South Hills High School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 69 in student achievement, 76 in school progress, 72 in closing performance gaps and 75 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Western Hills High School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and post-secondary. South Hills High School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Western Hills High School. They make up for 47.98% of student population, followed by African Americans (35.88%), Whites or Caucasians (12.32%), Two or More Races (2.29%), Asians (1.09%) and Native Americans (0.11%).
At South Hills High School, Hispanics make up 88.06% of student population, followed by African Americans (6.98%), Whites or Caucasians (3.25%), Asians (0.85%), Two or More Races (0.75%) and Native Americans (0.11%).
Based on household incomes, the Western Hills High School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 87.02% compared to 91.47% at South Hills High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Western Hills High School has 219 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 23.88% of student population. South Hills High School has significantly more ELLs at 778 or about 41.47% of student population.
In addition, Western Hills High School has 23.56% bilingual students, 7.63% are in the gifted and talented program, while 11.89% are in the special education program. This stacks up against South Hills High School with 39.98% bilingual students, 13.22% gifted and talented students and 9.12% students in the special education program.
Western Hills High School's 70 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 9 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 12.9 years. South Hills High School's 119 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 8.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 11 years.
