Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared West University Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Garden Oaks Montessori, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
West University Elementary School has a regular student population of 1,124 with a 16.7 students/teacher ratio while Garden Oaks Montessori has 800 students and a student-teacher ratio of 18.5 students/teacher ratio.
West University Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 96 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and 92 in closing performance gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
West University Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science and post-secondary. Garden Oaks Montessori did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at West University Elementary School. They make up for 61.83% of student population, followed by Asians (17.17%), Hispanics (13.08%), Two or More Races (5.87%), African Americans (1.60%) and Native Americans (0.18%).
The student population at Garden Oaks Montessori is also predominantly by Hispanics at 52.88%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (31.88%), Two or More Races (5.25%), African Americans (5.00%), Asians (4.38%) and Native Americans (0.50%).
Based on household incomes, the West University Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 6.58% compared to 41.25% at Garden Oaks Montessori.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, West University Elementary School has 45 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 4.00% of student population. Garden Oaks Montessori has significantly more ELLs at 191 or about 23.88% of student population.
West University Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 3.91%, gifted and talented students, 53.20%, while 8.10% are in the special education program. Garden Oaks Montessori bilingual students comprise 23.88%, gifted and talented students, 22.25%, and 14.38% are in the special education program.
