When we compared West Lake Middle School, which is a part of HUMBLE ISD, with Riverwood Middle School, which is a part of HUMBLE ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
West Lake Middle School’s regular student population is 1,732 with a 18.4 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Riverwood Middle School is 1,090 students and a 17.7 students/teacher ratio.
West Lake Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 76 in student achievement, 66 in school progress and 76 in closing performance gaps. It scored 76 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Riverwood Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 93 in student achievement, 91 in school progress, 90 in closing performance gaps and 92 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for West Lake Middle School and Riverwood Middle School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at West Lake Middle School. They make up for 34.06% of student population, followed by African Americans (31.41%), Whites or Caucasians (28.58%), Asians (3.00%), Two or More Races (2.31%) and Native Americans (0.29%).
At Riverwood Middle School, Whites or Caucasians make up 70.00% of student population, followed by Hispanics (17.43%), Asians (5.41%), African Americans (4.22%), Two or More Races (2.39%) and Native Americans (0.37%).
Based on household incomes, West Lake Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 29.04% compared to 9.54% at Riverwood Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, West Lake Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 4.97% of its student population compared to 2.94% at Riverwood Middle School.
In addition, West Lake Middle School has 4.27% bilingual students, 11.20% are in the gifted and talented program, while 8.89% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Riverwood Middle School with 2.66% bilingual students, 18.26% gifted and talented students and 6.06% students in the special education program.
