Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Wellington Elementary School, which is a part of LEWISVILLE ISD, with Camey Elementary School, which is a part of LEWISVILLE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Wellington Elementary School has a regular student population of 748 with a 13.8 students/teacher ratio while Camey Elementary School has 502 students and a student-teacher ratio of 11.2 students/teacher ratio.
Wellington Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 94 in student achievement, 86 in school progress and 82 in closing performance gaps. It scored 90 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Camey Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 74 in student achievement, 88 in school progress, 76 in closing performance gaps and 84 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Wellington Elementary School and Camey Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Wellington Elementary School. They make up for 56.95% of student population, followed by Asians (18.85%), Hispanics (17.25%), Two or More Races (5.35%), African Americans (1.34%) and Native Americans (0.13%).
The student population at Camey Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 45.42%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (26.29%), African Americans (16.73%), Two or More Races (7.97%), Asians (3.19%) and Native Americans (0.40%).
Based on household incomes, the Wellington Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 2.81% compared to 53.39% at Camey Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Wellington Elementary School has 72 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 9.63% of student population. Camey Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 145 or about 28.88% of student population.
Wellington Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 9.09%, gifted and talented students, 7.09%, while 11.23% are in the special education program. Camey Elementary School bilingual students comprise 40.04%, gifted and talented students, 4.98%, and 15.94% are in the special education program.
54 teachers employed at Wellington Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 10.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 16 years. The 45 teachers at Camey Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 6.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.3 years.
Of its teaching staff, Wellington Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has 15 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 30 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, three teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while two teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers.
