Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Welch Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Key Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Welch Middle School’s regular student population is 617 with a 16.5 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Key Middle School is 593 students and a 15.4 students/teacher ratio.
Welch Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 58 in student achievement, 80 in school progress and 76 in closing performance gaps. It scored 79 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Key Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 65 in student achievement, 85 in school progress, 78 in closing performance gaps and 83 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Key Middle School's seven out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Welch Middle School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Welch Middle School. They make up for 57.86% of student population, followed by African Americans (37.28%), Whites or Caucasians (2.11%), Asians (2.11%) and Two or More Races (0.65%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Key Middle School, African Americans are the biggest group, comprising 54.13% of student population, followed by Hispanics (43.51%), Whites or Caucasians (1.35%) and Two or More Races (1.01%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Welch Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is lower at 95.95% compared to 97.98% at Key Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Welch Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 43.27% of its student population compared to 26.48% at Key Middle School.
Welch Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 42.46%, gifted and talented students, 4.21%, while 11.83% are in the special education program. Key Middle School bilingual students comprise 25.46%, gifted and talented students, 2.70%, and 16.69% are in the special education program.
Welch Middle School's 37 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 5.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.8 years. Teachers at Key Middle School, numbering 38 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 5.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.7 years.
Of its teaching staff, Welch Middle School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has one teacher only serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 13 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers. Key Middle School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, no teacher serving the school for 20-30 years, 11 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 14 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Welch Middle School there are 24 female teachers and 13 male teachers.
