As your children go through high school, choosing the right school is equally important as deciding on a perfect home. When we compared Washington B T High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Eastwood Academy, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Washington B T High School’s regular student population is 848 with a student-teacher ratio of 15.2 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Eastwood Academy is 397 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17.4 students/teacher ratio.
Washington B T High School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 74 in student achievement, 84 in school progress and 73 in closing performance gaps. It scored 81 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Eastwood Academy performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 98 in student achievement, 96 in school progress, 88 in closing performance gaps and 95 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only five distinction designations or awards for outstanding performance. For Washington B T High School these are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Social Studies, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps while Eastwood Academy secured in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Social Studies, post-secondary and with 25% student progress.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Washington B T High School. They make up for 52.00% of student population, followed by African Americans (45.40%), Whites or Caucasians (1.89%), Two or More Races (0.47%) and Native Americans (0.24%). There is no Asians student in the school.
At Eastwood Academy, Hispanics make up 94.21% of student population, followed by Asians (2.52%), Whites or Caucasians (1.76%), African Americans (0.76%), Two or More Races (0.50%) and Native Americans (0.25%).
Based on household incomes, Washington B T High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 96.93% compared to 70.78% at Eastwood Academy.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Washington B T High School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 22.88% of its student population compared to 8.06% at Eastwood Academy.
In addition, Washington B T High School has 20.99% bilingual students, 8.73% are in the gifted and talented program, while 11.79% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Eastwood Academy with 7.30% bilingual students, 49.87% gifted and talented students and 1.26% students in the special education program.
Washington B T High School's 55 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 11.5 years. Eastwood Academy's 22 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 9 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 12.7 years.
Of its teaching staff, Washington B T High School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 11 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, five teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 24 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including seven beginning teachers. Eastwood Academy has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, eight teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while six teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher.
In both schools, male teachers outnumber the female teachers. Washington B T High School employs 23 male teachers and 32 female teachers. Of its teaching staff, three special education teachers are being assisted by five teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs four staff members in the school administration department and 11 more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, Eastwood Academy employs nine male teachers and 12 female teachers. The school also employs one staff members in the school administration department and four more working as school support staff.
