When we compared Waltrip High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Washington B T High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Waltrip High School’s regular student population is 1,711 with a student-teacher ratio of 15.9 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Washington B T High School is 848 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.2 students/teacher ratio.
Waltrip High School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 71 in student achievement, 77 in school progress and 72 in closing performance gaps. It scored 76 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Washington B T High School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 74 in student achievement, 84 in school progress, 73 in closing performance gaps and 81 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Waltrip High School’s only distinction designation is in Read/ELA. Washington B T High School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Social Studies, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Waltrip High School is Hispanics who make up nearly 77.09% of student population, followed by African Americans (14.67%), Whites or Caucasians (6.90%), Two or More Races (0.70%), Asians (0.41%) and Native Americans (0.23%).
The student population at Washington B T High School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 52.00%, followed by African Americans (45.40%), Whites or Caucasians (1.89%), Two or More Races (0.47%) and Native Americans (0.24%). There is no Asians student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Waltrip High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 77.09% compared to 96.93% at Washington B T High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Waltrip High School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 22.09% of its student population compared to 22.88% at Washington B T High School.
Waltrip High School’s bilingual students comprise 20.98%, gifted and talented students, 19.17%, while 11.22% are in the special education program. Washington B T High School bilingual students comprise 20.99%, gifted and talented students, 8.73%, and 11.79% are in the special education program.
Waltrip High School's 107 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 8 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 10.8 years. Washington B T High School's 55 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 11.5 years.
Of its teaching staff, Waltrip High School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 14 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 25 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 27 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 34 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers.
