Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Walnut Bend Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Patterson Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Walnut Bend Elementary School has a regular student population of 677 with a 17.4 students/teacher ratio while Patterson Elementary School has 845 students and a student-teacher ratio of 18.7 students/teacher ratio.
Walnut Bend Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 65 in student achievement, 88 in school progress and 74 in closing performance gaps. It scored 84 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Patterson Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 77 in student achievement, 93 in school progress, 88 in closing performance gaps and 92 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Patterson Elementary School's one out of seven distinction is in 25% closing performance gaps. Walnut Bend Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Walnut Bend Elementary School. They make up for 45.35% of student population, followed by African Americans (40.77%), Whites or Caucasians (8.27%), Asians (2.66%), Two or More Races (2.66%) and Native Americans (0.15%).
At Patterson Elementary School, Hispanics make up 92.78% of student population, followed by African Americans (4.62%), Whites or Caucasians (2.01%) and Asians (0.59%). There is no Native Americans and Two or More Racesstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Walnut Bend Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 86.85% compared to 92.43% at Patterson Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Walnut Bend Elementary School has 234 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 34.56% of student population. Patterson Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 451 or about 53.37% of student population.
In addition, Walnut Bend Elementary School has 33.83% bilingual students, 4.43% are in the gifted and talented program, while 6.20% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Patterson Elementary School with 66.51% bilingual students, 5.21% gifted and talented students and 7.46% students in the special education program.
