Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Umphrey Lee Elementary School, which is a part of DALLAS ISD, with Thomas Tolbert Elementary School, which is a part of DALLAS ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Umphrey Lee Elementary School has a regular student population of 408 with a 15 students/teacher ratio while Thomas Tolbert Elementary School has 368 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.1 students/teacher ratio.

Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Umphrey Lee Elementary School's two out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics and post-secondary. Except for Mathematics, Thomas Tolbert Elementary School earned one out of seven distinctions.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Umphrey Lee Elementary School. They make up for 50.74% of student population, followed by Hispanics (44.85%), Two or More Races (1.96%), Native Americans (1.47%) and Whites or Caucasians (0.98%). There is no Asians student in the school.
At Thomas Tolbert Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 62.50% of student population, followed by African Americans (33.15%), Two or More Races (2.99%), Whites or Caucasians (1.09%) and Asians (0.27%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Umphrey Lee Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is higher at 98.28% compared to 96.74% at Thomas Tolbert Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Umphrey Lee Elementary School has 150 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 36.76% of student population. Thomas Tolbert Elementary School has slightly more ELLs at 169 or about 45.92% of student population.
Umphrey Lee Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 34.80%, gifted and talented students, 14.22%, while 11.27% are in the special education program.
