Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Twin Creeks Middle School, which is a part of SPRING ISD, with Dueitt Middle School, which is a part of SPRING ISD, we noted a wide disparity in ratings.
Twin Creeks Middle School’s regular student population is 958 with a 15.6 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Dueitt Middle School is 857 students and a 15.8 students/teacher ratio.
Twin Creeks Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 67 in student achievement, 83 in school progress and 77 in closing performance gaps. It scored 81 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Dueitt Middle School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365. The school posted 56 in student achievement, 63 in school progress, 70 in closing performance gaps and 65 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Twin Creeks Middle School's two out of seven distinctions are in with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Dueitt Middle School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Twin Creeks Middle School. They make up for 44.89% of student population, followed by African Americans (37.79%), Whites or Caucasians (11.27%), Two or More Races (2.51%), Asians (1.25%) and Native Americans (1.04%).
The student population at Dueitt Middle School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 49.71%, followed by African Americans (37.81%), Whites or Caucasians (7.93%), Two or More Races (2.33%), Native Americans (1.17%) and Asians (0.70%).
Based on household incomes, the Twin Creeks Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 83.61% compared to 87.28% at Dueitt Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Twin Creeks Middle School has 176 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 18.37% of student population. Dueitt Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 218 or about 25.44% of student population.
In addition, Twin Creeks Middle School has 18.06% bilingual students, 6.47% are in the gifted and talented program, while 12.21% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Dueitt Middle School with 22.99% bilingual students, 6.77% gifted and talented students and 13.65% students in the special education program.
Twin Creeks Middle School's 61 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.6 years. Teachers at Dueitt Middle School, numbering 54 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 4.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 7.9 years.
Of its teaching staff, Twin Creeks Middle School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 22 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 11 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 17 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers. Dueitt Middle School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 18 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, five teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 18 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including ten beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Twin Creeks Middle School there are 40 female teachers and 20 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, eight special education teachers are being assisted by 13 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has five staff members in the school administration department and nine more working as school support staff.
At Dueitt Middle School there are 31 female teachers and 22 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, seven special education teachers are being assisted by 11 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and ten more working as school support staff.
