Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Travis Elementary School, which is a part of EL PASO ISD, with Douglass Elementary School, which is a part of EL PASO ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Travis Elementary School has a regular student population of 240 with a 11.6 students/teacher ratio while Douglass Elementary School has 501 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.7 students/teacher ratio.
Travis Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 71 in student achievement, 94 in school progress and 76 in closing performance gaps. On the other hand, Douglass Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 60 in student achievement, 96 in school progress, 76 in closing performance gaps and 90 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Travis Elementary School's two out of seven distinctions are in post-secondary and with 25% student progress. Except for post-secondary, Douglass Elementary School earned one out of seven distinctions.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Travis Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 95.42% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (2.92%), Asians (0.83%), African Americans (0.42%) and Two or More Races (0.42%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Douglass Elementary School, Hispanics make up 97.41% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (1.20%), African Americans (1.00%) and Two or More Races (0.40%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Travis Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is lower at 93.75% compared to 94.01% at Douglass Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Travis Elementary School has 143 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 59.58% of student population. Douglass Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 379 or about 75.65% of student population.
In addition, Travis Elementary School has 63.75% bilingual students, 4.17% are in the gifted and talented program, while 11.25% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Douglass Elementary School with 96.41% bilingual students, 4.79% gifted and talented students and 6.99% students in the special education program.
