Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Tough Elementary School, which is a part of CONROE ISD, with Lamar Elementary School, which is a part of CONROE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Tough Elementary School has a regular student population of 1,007 with a 16.8 students/teacher ratio while Lamar Elementary School has 615 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.2 students/teacher ratio.
Tough Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 95 in student achievement, 89 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. It scored 97 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Lamar Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 85 in student achievement, 82 in school progress, 73 in closing performance gaps and 81 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Tough Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in Science, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. Lamar Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Read/ELA.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Tough Elementary School. They make up for 54.62% of student population, followed by Hispanics (22.05%), Asians (15.09%), Two or More Races (5.26%), African Americans (2.78%) and Native Americans (0.10%).
The student population at Lamar Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 40.16%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (36.91%), Asians (9.27%), African Americans (8.29%), Two or More Races (4.55%) and Native Americans (0.33%).
Based on household incomes, the Tough Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 6.75% compared to 46.67% at Lamar Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Tough Elementary School has 139 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 13.80% of student population. Lamar Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 184 or about 29.92% of student population.
Tough Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 13.41%, gifted and talented students, 17.28%, while 5.06% are in the special education program. Lamar Elementary School bilingual students comprise 36.75%, gifted and talented students, 5.20%, and 11.06% are in the special education program.
59 teachers employed at Tough Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 6.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.6 years. The 38 teachers at Lamar Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 6.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.9 years.
Of its teaching staff, Tough Elementary School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 13 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 20 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 17 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. Lamar Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 18 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 12 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while two teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Tough Elementary School there are 57 female teachers and two male teachers. Of its teaching staff, seven special education teachers are being assisted by 14 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and seven more working as school support staff.
