Tompkins High School’s regular student population is 3,254 with a student-teacher ratio of 16.5 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Katy High School is 3,189 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.3 students/teacher ratio.
Tompkins High School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 95 in student achievement, 85 in school progress and 94 in closing performance gaps. It scored 95 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Katy High School also performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 91 in student achievement, 88 in school progress, 86 in closing performance gaps and 90 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Tompkins High School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. Katy High School’s two out of seven distinctions are in Science and post-secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Tompkins High School. They make up for 33.62% of student population, followed by Asians (29.35%), Hispanics (24.25%), African Americans (9.43%), Two or More Races (3.10%) and Native Americans (0.12%).
The student population at Katy High School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 44.59%, followed by Hispanics (36.59%), African Americans (10.38%), Asians (4.80%), Two or More Races (3.20%) and Native Americans (0.16%).
Based on household incomes, the Tompkins High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 14.78% compared to 33.62% at Katy High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Tompkins High School has 178 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 5.47% of student population. Katy High School has significantly more ELLs at 307 or about 9.63% of student population.
Tompkins High School’s bilingual students comprise 5.29%, gifted and talented students, 16.63%, while 8.36% are in the special education program. Katy High School bilingual students comprise 9.25%, gifted and talented students, 7.12%, and 10.72% are in the special education program.
Tompkins High School's 197 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 6.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 11.2 years. Katy High School's 209 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 9.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 14.1 years.
Of its teaching staff, Tompkins High School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 20 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 73 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 45 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 54 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. Katy High School has 13 teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 44 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 56 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 31 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 52 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 13 beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. Tompkins High School employs 118 female teachers and 79 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 22 special education teachers are being assisted by 25 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. On the other hand, Katy High School employs 132 female teachers and 76 male teachers.
