Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Tom Wilson Elementary School, which is a part of KATY ISD, with Loraine T Golbow Elementary School, which is a part of KATY ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Tom Wilson Elementary School has a regular student population of 1,103 with a 13.7 students/teacher ratio while Loraine T Golbow Elementary School has 853 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12.2 students/teacher ratio.
Tom Wilson Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Tom Wilson Elementary School's five out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Loraine T Golbow Elementary School’s two out of seven distinctions are in post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Tom Wilson Elementary School. They make up for 32.46% of student population, followed by Asians (28.47%), Whites or Caucasians (27.38%), African Americans (8.79%), Two or More Races (2.81%) and Native Americans (0.09%).
The student population at Loraine T Golbow Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 42.32%, followed by African Americans (28.49%), Whites or Caucasians (17.00%), Asians (8.91%), Two or More Races (2.70%) and Native Americans (0.35%).
Based on household incomes, the Tom Wilson Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 19.13% compared to 71.40% at Loraine T Golbow Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Tom Wilson Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 35.63% of its student population compared to 29.89% at Loraine T Golbow Elementary School.
Tom Wilson Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 35.63%, gifted and talented students, 8.98%, while 13.42% are in the special education program. Loraine T Golbow Elementary School bilingual students comprise 29.07%, gifted and talented students, 1.29%, and 17.94% are in the special education program.
