Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Thornwood Elementary School, which is a part of SPRING BRANCH ISD, with Bendwood School, which is a part of SPRING BRANCH ISD, we noted a wide disparity in ratings.
Thornwood Elementary School has a regular student population of 389 with a 12.8 students/teacher ratio while Bendwood School has 33 students and a student-teacher ratio of 2.1 students/teacher ratio.
Thornwood Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 70 in student achievement, 86 in school progress and 74 in closing performance gaps. It scored 82 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, the performance indicators not applicable for Bendwood School due to the on-going impact from the COVID-19 pandemic.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Thornwood Elementary School and Bendwood School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Thornwood Elementary School. They make up for 45.76% of student population, followed by African Americans (33.16%), Whites or Caucasians (11.57%), Two or More Races (5.14%), Asians (4.11%) and Native Americans (0.26%).
At Bendwood School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 57.58% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (27.27%), African Americans (6.06%), Asians (6.06%) and Two or More Races (3.03%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Thornwood Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 89.20% compared to 69.70% at Bendwood School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Thornwood Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 40.87% of its student population compared to 33.33% at Bendwood School.
Thornwood Elementary School 10.80% are in the special education program, 4.37% are in the gifted and talented program, and bilingual students comprise 40.87% students. Bendwood School has no gifted and talented student, while 100.00% are in the special education program, and bilingual students comprise 33.33% students.
30 teachers employed at Thornwood Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 6.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 7.7 years. The 15 teachers at Bendwood School have been serving the school for an average of 12.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 16.1 years.
Of its teaching staff, Thornwood Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, three teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 13 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers. Bendwood School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, ten teachers have worked for 11-20 years, two teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while one teacher only has been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Thornwood Elementary School there are 28 female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, five teachers are aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and ten more working as school support staff.
At Bendwood School there are 14 female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, six special education teachers are being assisted by six teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
