Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Thomas Elementary School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, with Mendenhall Elementary School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Thomas Elementary School has a regular student population of 619 with a 11.5 students/teacher ratio while Mendenhall Elementary School has 578 students and a student-teacher ratio of 10.5 students/teacher ratio.
Thomas Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 71 in student achievement, 89 in school progress and 77 in closing performance gaps. It scored 85 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Mendenhall Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 59 in student achievement, 80 in school progress, 75 in closing performance gaps and 79 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Thomas Elementary School and Mendenhall Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Thomas Elementary School. They make up for 58.80% of student population, followed by African Americans (19.22%), Whites or Caucasians (13.89%), Two or More Races (4.20%), Asians (3.72%) and Native Americans (0.16%).
At Mendenhall Elementary School, Hispanics make up 71.28% of student population, followed by African Americans (12.28%), Whites or Caucasians (9.86%), Two or More Races (4.15%), Asians (2.25%) and Native Americans (0.17%).
Based on household incomes, the Thomas Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 67.53% compared to 76.82% at Mendenhall Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Thomas Elementary School has 300 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 48.47% of student population. Mendenhall Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 342 or about 59.17% of student population.
Thomas Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 48.79%, gifted and talented students, 4.68%, while 17.61% are in the special education program. Mendenhall Elementary School bilingual students comprise 59.17%, gifted and talented students, 3.98%, and 17.47% are in the special education program.
