Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Sylvia Mendez Crew Leadership Academy and Esperanza Medrano Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Sylvia Mendez Crew Leadership Academy is Hispanics who make up nearly 83.82% of student population, followed by African Americans (11.55%), Whites or Caucasians (2.73%), Native Americans (1.26%) and Two or More Races (0.63%). There is no Asians student in the school.
At Esperanza Medrano Elementary School, Hispanics make up 70.43% of student population, followed by African Americans (22.90%), Asians (3.19%), Two or More Races (1.74%), Whites or Caucasians (1.16%) and Native Americans (0.58%).
Based on household incomes, Sylvia Mendez Crew Leadership Academy’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 96.01% compared to 90.14% at Esperanza Medrano Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Sylvia Mendez Crew Leadership Academy has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 69.54% of its student population compared to 60.29% at Esperanza Medrano Elementary School.
In addition, Sylvia Mendez Crew Leadership Academy has 64.71% bilingual students, 9.03% are in the gifted and talented program, while 14.50% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Esperanza Medrano Elementary School with 58.26% bilingual students, 22.61% gifted and talented students and 13.91% students in the special education program.
