Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Sue Crouch Elementary School, which is a part of CROWLEY ISD, with Deer Creek Elementary School, which is a part of CROWLEY ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Sue Crouch Elementary School has a regular student population of 370 with a 11.2 students/teacher ratio while Deer Creek Elementary School has 726 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.1 students/teacher ratio.
Sue Crouch Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 65 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and 78 in closing performance gaps. It scored 88 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Deer Creek Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 80 in student achievement, 91 in school progress, 94 in closing performance gaps and 92 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Sue Crouch Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Comparative Academic Growth. Deer Creek Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Sue Crouch Elementary School. They make up for 61.89% of student population, followed by Hispanics (25.68%), Whites or Caucasians (7.03%), Two or More Races (3.24%), Asians (1.35%) and Native Americans (0.54%).
The student population at Deer Creek Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 49.86%, followed by African Americans (24.24%), Whites or Caucasians (18.73%), Two or More Races (5.23%), Asians (1.24%) and Native Americans (0.55%).
Based on household incomes, Sue Crouch Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 82.43% compared to 71.90% at Deer Creek Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Sue Crouch Elementary School has 56 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 15.14% of student population. Deer Creek Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 214 or about 29.48% of student population.
In addition, Sue Crouch Elementary School has 15.14% bilingual students, 3.78% are in the gifted and talented program, while 20.54% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Deer Creek Elementary School with 35.95% bilingual students, 9.64% gifted and talented students and 10.61% students in the special education program.

In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Sue Crouch Elementary School there are 30 female teachers and two male teachers. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by 15 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
