Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Stevens Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Sutton Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Stevens Elementary School has a regular student population of 551 with a 16.6 students/teacher ratio while Sutton Elementary School has 1,008 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17.5 students/teacher ratio.
Stevens Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 56 in student achievement, 86 in school progress and 71 in closing performance gaps. It scored 82 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Sutton Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 72 in student achievement, 94 in school progress, 79 in closing performance gaps and 90 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Sutton Elementary School's two out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics and with 25% student progress. Stevens Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Stevens Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 80.22% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (9.44%), African Americans (9.07%), Two or More Races (0.91%) and Asians (0.18%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Sutton Elementary School, Hispanics make up 73.12% of student population, followed by Asians (11.31%), African Americans (8.93%), Whites or Caucasians (5.56%), Two or More Races (0.79%) and Native Americans (0.30%).
Based on household incomes, the Stevens Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 89.66% compared to 94.84% at Sutton Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Stevens Elementary School has 228 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 41.38% of student population. Sutton Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 745 or about 73.91% of student population.
In addition, Stevens Elementary School has 40.29% bilingual students, 3.81% are in the gifted and talented program, while 7.80% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Sutton Elementary School with 73.02% bilingual students, 6.25% gifted and talented students and 8.04% students in the special education program.

The 57 teachers at Sutton Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 11.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 14.4 years.

Sutton Elementary School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 18 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 13 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 13 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while ten teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Stevens Elementary School there are 27 female teachers and six male teachers. Of its teaching staff, one special education teacher is being assisted by four teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
