Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only two distinction designations or awards for performance. For Southmayd Elementary School these are in Mathematics and with 25% student progress while Lockhart Elementary School secured in Science and with 25% student progress.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Southmayd Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 96.01% of student population, followed by African Americans (3.24%), Whites or Caucasians (0.50%) and Two or More Races (0.25%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
At Lockhart Elementary School, African Americans make up 93.05% of student population, followed by Hispanics (3.72%), Whites or Caucasians (1.99%), Asians (0.50%) and Two or More Races (0.50%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Southmayd Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 93.27% compared to 89.33% at Lockhart Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Southmayd Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 47.38% of its student population compared to 0.25% at Lockhart Elementary School.
Southmayd Elementary School 10.22% are in the special education program, 5.49% are in the gifted and talented program, and bilingual students comprise 43.39% students. Lockhart Elementary School has no bilingual student, while 8.68% are in the special education program, and 2.98% are in the gifted and talented program students.
