Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Sharpstown International School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Mandarin Immersion Magnet School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Sharpstown International School has a regular student population of 1,304 with a 17.1 students/teacher ratio while Mandarin Immersion Magnet School has 710 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17.3 students/teacher ratio.
Sharpstown International School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 89 in student achievement, 90 in school progress and 86 in closing performance gaps. It scored 89 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Mandarin Immersion Magnet School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 95 in student achievement, 96 in school progress, 100 in closing performance gaps and 97 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Sharpstown International School’s two out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA) and 25% closing performance gaps. Mandarin Immersion Magnet School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Sharpstown International School is Hispanics who make up nearly 82.52% of student population, followed by Asians (8.51%), African Americans (6.44%), Whites or Caucasians (1.99%), Native Americans (0.23%) and Two or More Races (0.23%).
The student population at Mandarin Immersion Magnet School is also predominantly by Asians at 46.34%, followed by Hispanics (18.17%), African Americans (13.52%), Whites or Caucasians (11.55%) and Two or More Races (10.28%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Sharpstown International School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 97.70% compared to 27.75% at Mandarin Immersion Magnet School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Sharpstown International School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 27.53% of its student population compared to 21.97% at Mandarin Immersion Magnet School.
In addition, Sharpstown International School has 26.99% bilingual students, 24.77% are in the gifted and talented program, while 6.44% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Mandarin Immersion Magnet School with 59.44% bilingual students, 42.82% gifted and talented students and 3.80% students in the special education program.
76 teachers employed at Sharpstown International School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 8.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.4 years. The 41 teachers at Mandarin Immersion Magnet School have been serving the school for an average of 5.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.3 years.
Of its teaching staff, Sharpstown International School has four teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 11 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 19 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 14 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 21 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers. Mandarin Immersion Magnet School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, eight teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 12 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 12 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Sharpstown International School there are 53 female teachers and 22 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, three special education teachers are being assisted by two teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and four more working as school support staff.
At Mandarin Immersion Magnet School there are 30 female teachers and ten male teachers. Of its teaching staff, one teacher is in special education without any assistance.
