Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Shadowbriar Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with West University Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Shadowbriar Elementary School has a regular student population of 521 with a 17.9 students/teacher ratio while West University Elementary School has 1,124 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.7 students/teacher ratio.
Shadowbriar Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Shadowbriar Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Science. West University Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science and post-secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Shadowbriar Elementary School. They make up for 62.76% of student population, followed by Hispanics (26.87%), Whites or Caucasians (5.18%), Asians (2.30%), Two or More Races (2.11%) and Native Americans (0.77%).
At West University Elementary School, Whites or Caucasians are the biggest group, comprising 61.83% of student population, followed by Asians (17.17%), Hispanics (13.08%), Two or More Races (5.87%), African Americans (1.60%) and Native Americans (0.18%).
Based on household incomes, Shadowbriar Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 81.57% compared to 6.58% at West University Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Shadowbriar Elementary School has a higher number of English Language Learners comprising 10.56% of its student population compared to 4.00% at West University Elementary School.
Additionally, Shadowbriar Elementary School has 9.60% bilingual students, 2.11% are in the gifted and talented program, while 9.21% are in the special education program. West University Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 3.91% of student population while 8.10% are in the special education program. West University Elementary School bested Shadowbriar Elementary School in one area, with nearly 53.20% of its student population in the gifted and talented program.
