Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Shadow Forest Elementary School, which is a part of HUMBLE ISD, with Pineforest Elementary School, which is a part of HUMBLE ISD, we noted that the two schools are on opposite ends of the ratings spectrum.
Shadow Forest Elementary School has a regular student population of 619 with a 16.2 students/teacher ratio while Pineforest Elementary School has 590 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.1 students/teacher ratio.
Shadow Forest Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 91 in student achievement, 88 in school progress and 87 in closing performance gaps. It scored 90 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Pineforest Elementary School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365. The school posted 69 in student achievement, 65 in school progress, 67 in closing performance gaps and 68 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Shadow Forest Elementary School and Pineforest Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Shadow Forest Elementary School is Whites or Caucasians who make up nearly 67.37% of student population, followed by Hispanics (16.80%), Asians (7.59%), Two or More Races (4.20%) and African Americans (3.55%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
The student population at Pineforest Elementary School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 42.88%, followed by Hispanics (32.88%), African Americans (16.27%), Two or More Races (4.75%), Asians (2.20%) and Native Americans (0.34%).
Based on household incomes, the Shadow Forest Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 14.70% compared to 41.19% at Pineforest Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Shadow Forest Elementary School has 19 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 3.07% of student population. Pineforest Elementary School has more ELLs at 22 or about 3.73% of student population.
Shadow Forest Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 2.58%, gifted and talented students, 8.72%, while 11.79% are in the special education program. Pineforest Elementary School bilingual students comprise 3.39%, gifted and talented students, 4.24%, and 11.19% are in the special education program.
38 teachers employed at Shadow Forest Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 10.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 15.3 years. The 39 teachers at Pineforest Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 8.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 14.3 years.
Of its teaching staff, Shadow Forest Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has 11 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 14 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, five teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while six teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only. Pineforest Elementary School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 16 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while five teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher.
