Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Seven Lakes Junior High School, which is a part of KATY ISD, with Katy Junior High School, which is a part of KATY ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Seven Lakes Junior High School’s regular student population is 1,529 with a 18.4 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Katy Junior High School is 1,099 students and a 14.1 students/teacher ratio.
Seven Lakes Junior High School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 96 in student achievement, 93 in school progress and 98 in closing performance gaps. It scored 97 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Katy Junior High School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 85 in student achievement, 85 in school progress, 81 in closing performance gaps and 84 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Seven Lakes Junior High School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary and with 25% student progress. Katy Junior High School’s three out of seven distinctions are in Science, Social Studies and post-secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Asians comprise the biggest group at Seven Lakes Junior High School. They make up for 34.66% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (28.97%), Hispanics (26.03%), African Americans (7.13%), Two or More Races (2.88%) and Native Americans (0.26%).
The student population at Katy Junior High School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 47.13%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (36.31%), African Americans (9.83%), Two or More Races (4.19%), Asians (2.00%) and Native Americans (0.27%).
Based on household incomes, the Seven Lakes Junior High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 18.77% compared to 46.50% at Katy Junior High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Seven Lakes Junior High School has 176 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 11.51% of student population. Katy Junior High School has significantly more ELLs at 218 or about 19.84% of student population.
Seven Lakes Junior High School’s bilingual students comprise 10.73%, gifted and talented students, 22.30%, while 8.44% are in the special education program. Katy Junior High School bilingual students comprise 18.93%, gifted and talented students, 5.00%, and 19.65% are in the special education program.
